ALCANNA Food Bank Press Release - April 26, 2020

ALCANNA AND PARTNERS TO DONATE UP TO $200,000 FOR FOOD BANKS ALBERTA

EDMONTON, ALBERTA, APRIL 26TH, 2020

Alcanna Inc. - which owns and operates liquor and cannabis stores in Alberta under multiple banners including Ace Discount Liquor, Wine and Beyond, Liquor Depot and Nova Cannabis - announced today that it has partnered with four major suppliers to make  a cash donation of up to $200,000 for Food Banks Alberta. Food Banks Alberta is the coordinating body for community food banks across the province. The funds will be allocated by Food Banks Alberta to the food banks in the 29 Alberta communities where Alcanna has stores.

“Food banks are a critical resource in our communities and in this time of COVID-19 disruption to the lives of so many Albertans the demand on them has never been greater. In our discussions with Food Banks Alberta we learned of the urgent situation their members were facing Alcanna and or industry partners were pleased to assist.” said James Burns Vice Chair and CEO of Alcanna. “Alcanna and our 2,500 team members are proud to continue our company’s history of giving back to the community.”

“Food banks across Alberta are experiencing record demand from Albertans in need, a great many coming to our food banks for the first time due to the COVID-19 damage to our economy. But our traditional suppliers of food are simply not able to help as much as they do in normal times. Restaurants are largely closed and grocery stores are seeing high demand for almost everything they sell.” said Doug Tweddle, Chair of Food Banks Alberta. “This initiative from Alcanna and its industry partners could not have come at a more needed time. The food banks in the 29 communities Alcanna serves desperately require these funds.”

Four Alcanna suppliers will each donate up to $25,000 based on sales of those partners’ featured products in Alcanna stores throughout the month of May. Alcanna will match those donations dollar for dollar - up to $100,000 creating a potential total of $200,000.

“Food Banks Alberta is extremely grateful to Alcanna and its industry partners for their generosity. We hope Albertans shopping at Wine and Beyond, Liquor Depot, Ace Discount Liquor and Nova Cannabis will support this initiative and Food Banks Alberta.” said Mr. Tweddle.

In addition to the cash donation, Alcanna will:

  • Donate paper and plastic bags for hamper preparation and distribution
  • Assist in transporting food to smaller centres when is space available on our trucks delivering to those communities
  • Expand the volunteer program it had already started with several local food banks where Alcanna team members worked at food bank locations
  • Promote Food Banks Alberta and local food banks in our stores to raise awareness in our customers of the great work food banks do and why they need our support now more than ever
